Panax ginseng is a herbaceous plant that climbs with wrapped stems. The climbing stem is 2 – 3 m long, many branches. Leaves grow opposite, heart-shaped, whole edge, wavy or slightly serrated, green on top, white velvet on the bottom. The flowers grow separately in the leaf axils, the stem is 2 – 6 cm long, the calyx consists of 5 narrow plates, the corolla is white, bell-shaped, divided into 5 lobes, stamens 5. The capsule is spherical with 5 fuzzy edges, the upper end has a small knob shaped cones, purple or red when ripe. Seeds are light yellow in color. The roots swell into long cylindrical tubers, 1.5 – 2.0 cm in diameter, large above, branched below, pale yellow.

3. Ecological conditions

Panax ginseng lives in fertile, humus-rich, dry, well-drained soil. Suitable temperature is 18 – 25oC, can withstand temperatures above 30oC but does not last long. In winter, when the temperature is low, the tree can still survive. Average rainfall is 1,200 – 1,500 mm.

In mountainous areas at an altitude of 400 – 1,600 m above sea level, the plant grows wild, with a growth cycle lasting 1 year. In the plains, trees can still grow but the time is shortened to 8-9 months.
